anyone who thinks sherlock holmes is a woman-hating misanthrope
should be taken out back and lovingly read the canon from cover to cover, lingering on the moments when he soothes a worried governess or giggles at stupid coincidences or wriggles in his chair in excitement or saves the reveal till the end for the joy of watching other people’s faces or worries for a young governess’s safety or calls watson “my dear.”
he loves people. that’s why he does what he does. he’s such a tender soul.
Listen to the Elinor in all her wisdom.
Holmes isn’t a woman-hating misanthrope.
He just doesn’t suffer fools.
He’s absolutely sympathetic to victims of domestic violence and sexual harassment.
He finds an intelligent woman involved in a case and he asks her for help as long as it’s something that won’t cause her any harm.
He expresses his worry for his clients by saying he wouldn’t let his sister do what they’re doing.
He is sometimes snide to the police because the police have a job they are being paid to do and they’re doing it really badly.
He’s also really nasty to … rich predators who take advantage of women in their employment.
Woman-hating is the opposite of what he is.
I absolutely second ALL of this.
But just feel I should add that he does exhibit period-typical misogyny, such as thinking that women are generally a mystery, think differently from men, are more concerned with frivolous pursuits, etc. (I don’t have the receipts with me but someone with photographic memory of canon will know these references I’m sure.)
